A group of outsiders flip an Arizona lake town on its head attempting to rescue a bullied marina from snobby, yacht club encroachment by staging a mammoth, end-of-season, pro wakeboarding festival against the wishes of the town’s hardnosed park rangers.

Callun and his best friends kick off summer with some kilt wakeboarding (no undies) and host a raucous house party at their lake house. Accused of having no direction, Cal’s girlfriend dumps him. The party spirals out of control and the next day, Callun is kicked out of his rental which jeopardizes the epic summer he and his friends had planned.

Rather than move back home and work all season under the judging eye of his parents, Cal convinces his best friend Joe to pay for the group to road trip to Lake Victoria, Arizona where a childhood crush “Nika” can hook them up with jobs at her family’s Marina.

Reluctantly, Joe agrees and the group find themselves on the move in search of the endless summer. They soon realize that it's not all sunshine and rainbows on the road to paradise.

This comic series follows a crew of best friend wakeboarders as they navigate societal pressures, parties, love and life.

You won't find any super heroes in Shake The Lake, instead it's set in real life with a relatable action sports story about restless youth and endless summers. It’s Lords of Dogtown on the water with a bit of American Pie meets Wet Hot American Summer.
Shake The Lake Volume 1 of a 4 part realistic comic book series.

I got a free copy for review. In short, it was enjoyable, but at the end I'm not too invested in the characters or the story. Then again, it's just the first volume.

The protagonist is a party-for-the-moment skilled wakeboarder and is inconsiderate, wrecking a summer rental for no good reason and landing his friends in a housing predicament. It's a pattern, as revealed by a flashback. His friends are bros and relocate to a marina operation that is under threat from the yacht club. There are other wakeboarders but they kneel to the yacht club's rules and protagonist does not like this. Protagonist has googly eyes for a childhood friend that has since developed. The stage is set for rebellious wakeboarding, young romance, and class conflict!

The art is distinct, with digitally airbrushed colors. The forms and layouts are generally good, with a few missteps that lack clarity but nothing unforgivable for an initial independent effort. It's definitely ahead of the crowd.

I don't think a media consumer needs to identify with the protagonist but they do need to be invested in them or the world they navigate. This is the real world with real people so I'm just happy protagonist got a job. Yeah, protagonist has a father that says as much. There isn't much room for character development with a cast of this size so I hope there's more in the next volume.

It is OK, but at 72 not quite for old folks like me. Might be enjoyed by the younger set
I cannot see any purpose in publishing this comic book. I guess it must be because the artist likes to draw pictures.
I'm no fan of wakeboarding or graphic novels but there is something about Shake the Lake that is both genuine and genuinely interesting. I can't wait for part 2!
A perfect introductory graphic novel. Its fun to read and to look at. Seems to be a humorous coming of age tale.
Surprisingly good comic. Good illustrations. Good story. Entertaining all the way through... Can't wait for V#2.
Funny and entertaining. Love the detailed artwork and characters. Looking forward to Volume 2 when it comes out! Would recommend for anyone who likes wakeboarding or water sports.
A group of young guys want to do nothing but wakeboard and party all of the time. But when their latest party gets them evicted and one of them gets dumped by his girlfriend, the group decides to relocate. They head off to work at a Marian owned by one of their uncles. But a new yacht club is threatening the business.

First off, this is obviously written by someone that loves wakeboarding and the quest for the endless summer. If you aren't into that, you may have a hard time connecting with the story. The second thing is that it takes a deft hand to convey action with a static picture. Unfortunately, I am not a wakeboarder looking to spend my life on the water. So I had a slight problem connecting with the characters. There were a few points where I didn't feel that the story really let me know what was happening. Why did they all run out of the house? Obviously, they found something gross but what would make a pack of teenage boys run from their own house?

As with any graphic novel, the artwork plays a huge role in how it is received. This had the detailed look that I appreciate at first glance. But that first glance was deceiving. The artwork would pinball back and forth between too much detail (drawing every strand of hair or adding veins to the arm of the burger place manager) to not enough detail (faces lacked detail which rendered them into androgynous beings to the point I couldn't tell if the character was a long-haired guy or a short-haired girl). Frankly, the artwork started to make it think of computer games like the Sims. Realistic but fake looking at the same time.

So, if you love wakeboarding and like computer game artwork of people in swimwear, then this will be a great find. Otherwise, I recommend that you try to find it for free like I did. That way you get to try it without too much of an investment, just your time to read a comic book.
